( BOEN TAKES HOME MLRA/NCRA FEATURE AT I-80 )
Jim Brennan
(Greenwood, Ne., 09/26/09) The Cornhusker
Classic sprang to life on Saturday night with over 200 cars in the pits at I-80
Speedway.
The main attraction was the MLRA/NCRA Late Models and there
were 46 of them signed in to do battle. And Kelly Boen picked up the victory
with a thrilling pass of Kyle Berck with 3 laps left. Berck could not recover
and had to settle for 2nd place.
While Berck started the feature on the
outside front row, Boen started deep in the pack at 12th. MLRA point leader John
Anderson challenged Berck in the early going before his motor let go. But Boen
was on the move and by lap 4 he was in 4th. Boen took over 2nd on lap 8 when
Anderson's motor blew. Several restarts kept things close as Boen worked high
and low to pass Berck. Finally with 3 laps left Boen made a slingshot move
inside and slid up in front of Berck. The crowd went wild at this. Al Purkey
finished 3rd and picked up some valuable ground on Anderson in the MLRA points.
Berck is leading the NCRA points by a couple of hundred over Boen.
Heat races
were won by Al Humphrey, Greg Larson, Mike Collins, John Anderson and Craig
Preble while the twin B-features were won by Al Zeitner and Denny
Woodworth.
Qualifying heat races were run tin the NASCAR Late Models
and Pro-ams, and the IMCA Modifieds, Sports Mods and Sports Compacts.
